Google Voice (was GrandCentral)

GrandCentral.com, which in summer 2007 was acquired by Google, is a free service currently in beta testing mode. It recently began transitioning to Google Voice, which promises to keep "all the things people like about GrandCentral" and add features such as transcripts, SMS, international calling and conference calling. Existing GrandCentral users are being prompted to upgrade to Google Voice, but the service is not yet open to new users. Users get one phone number that rings to all (or some, or none) of their phones, depending on who is calling. Messages are filtered into a voicemail box that can be accessed by phone on online, and notifications can be sent to email or via SMS. Calls can be screened and recorded (where legal), and users can listen to messages as they're being recorded and choose to take the call partway into it. Unwanted callers can be blocked. Other options include personal greetings, ringback tones and the ability to switch phones in the middle of a call. Also, "visual voicemail" feature works with MP3-enabled mobile devices.
