Text: MacCalc is a full featured spreadsheet for the Macintosh. Its outstanding feature being speed of calculation and model constuction. This is a small program compared to Excel, Lotus 1-2-3, or WingZ, to name a few of the more popular spreadsheet programs. By contrast the latest version of Lotus 1-2-3 requires up to 3 mbytes of memory to operate with system 7; while MacCalc requires approximately 300 kbytes. For the user who doesn't need all the features in the more sophisticated spread-sheets and wants to save memory for other applications this software may suffice. The basic spreadsheet has the look and feel of Excel, but doesn't provide graphics or macro's which were available even in the older versions of Excel. A comprehensive set of functions and mathematical operators are available from the pull down menus. Cells and ranges operate in the same manner as the Excel program; as do Numbers, Dates, Logical Values and Text. The columns and rows of the worksheet form 124,875 cells. There is a feature by which a 'note' may be attached to an individual cell by double clicking. Commands for sorting and filling are present if needed. A header and/or footer can be added to a specific document from a page layout window accessed from the print layout command. It is also possible to add borders around specific data if desired. In conclusion, MacCalc provides a basic no frills spreadsheet which does not require an excessive amount of memory and would satisfy the needs of many users. For home finances and record keeping this program could fulfill most requirements. Not finding any mail order listing for the product, I called Bravo and found that the product is currently available, supported, compatible with systems 6 & 7 (no balloon help, publish and subscribe or color support). The software is provided on a single disk with an excellent descriptive manual. The latest version is 1.2d and the retail price is $139. MacCalc* software is available from: Bravo Technologies, Inc. P.O. Box 10078 Berkeley, CA 94709-0078 (510) 841-8552
