Text: Thinkin' Things, by Edmark, is an award winning educational program that helps 4 to 8 year olds learn how to think in a creative and logical way. The program's main menu is a group of boxes that represent six different learning activities. To open each activity, the child just clicks on the desired box. Each activity is designed to enhance the child's mental abilities by offering learning experiences that combine listening, visual, and thinking skills. The animated characters ''Tooney Loon'' and ''Oranga Banga'' help the child to differentiate instrument sounds, explore music, and build memory skills. ''Oranga Banga'' will play back the child's musical composition in a delightful one-man-band fashion. In the The Fripple Shop the child matches Fripples to each customer's order. In the Feathered Friends Factory the child must recognize similarities and differences in a series of birds and identify how the birds they create fit into a pattern. In Flying Spheres and Flying Shapes, the child explores different geometric shapes by creating them and sending them into 3-D type motion. The child can also create animated screen savers set to music. The activities are fun, engaging, and help the child to develop recognition, memory, discrimination, and patterning (logic) skills. The program comes on three disks and requires a color Mac (LC, Si, or Quadra), a hard disk, System 6.0.7 or higher, and 4 MB of RAM. The program runs flawlessly and is very easy to use. Parents can adjust the difficulty level so that each child can progress at his or her own pace. The program comes with an excellent manual that is easy to understand. The manual provides parents with numerous suggestions to help enhance their child's learning. In addition, when you register the program with Edmark they will send you a copy of Parents Guide to Using the Computer as a Creativity Tool. Thinkin' Things is a great program for students (and educators) in the primary grades. There are many educational programs that teach subject related skills, but I've seen few that teach actual thinking skills. Thinkin' Things will provide many hours of learning, exploration, and entertainment. The activities will captivate the interest of both children and adults as they explore the virtually limitless possibilities of Thinkin' Things. Thinkin' Things is available for both the Mac & the PC at $59.95 retail, or $39.95 mailorder (MacWarehouse) and is published by: Edmark Corporation P.O. Box 3218 Redmond, WA 98073-3218, 206/556-8484
