Text: America Online has announced it is lowering the cost of its popular on-line service. In a bid to compete with the myriad of on-line competition - especially Prodigy - AOL's new pricing scheme makes it the most affordable national service around. Beginning May 1, AOL will charge a new fixed monthly fee of $9.95, which includes access to all services for five hours each month. These five hours are usable any time day or night - gone are the days of "prime time" and "off-peak" usage. Furthermore, starting July 1, additional time beyond the initial five hours will cost $3.50 per hour , again with no extra charge for usage during business hours. AOL does not charge extra for services such as electronic mail and software downloading. One reason for the price change was to have a universal rate for all users. Users that signed on during various promotions were all paying different rates. Under the old system, typical users paid a monthly fee of $5.95 which included one non-prime time hour online. Additional time cost $5 per hour during non-prime time (6PM to 6AM weekdays, plus Saturdays and Sundays) and $10 per hour during prime time. America Online customer service can be reached at (800) 827-6364.
