MBONE: Multicasting Tomorrow's Internet
MBONE Applications and Tools for UNIX
These tools and applications allow you to participate in MBONE events using UNIX platforms.
- SD (Session Directory) SD is getting obsolete but is production quality. I suggest you get it in case you run into problems with the session directory tool I recommend (SDR).
SD can be obtained at ftp.ee.lbl.gov under /conferencing/sd/ and the files are named *.tar.Z, where the star represents an operating system name. Documentation relative to installation is included.
- SDR (Session Directory) This is the one I recommend, but it is only an alpha release and may have a few bugs.
SDR is available at bells.cs.ucl.ac.uk in /mice/sdr and the file is named sdr.*.V2.1a8.gz, where the star represents an operating system name and number.
- MMCC (Session Directory, an alternate one) MMCC is stored at ftp.isi.edu in /confctrl/mmcc/, and the files are named mmcc-*.tar.Z, where the * represents an operating system name.
- VAT (Audio Tool, I recommend this one) Vat can be obtained from ftp.ee.lbl.gov in /conferencing/vat/, and the files are named *.tar.Z, where the star represents an operating system name. The file contains documentation relative to installation.
- NEVOT (Audio tool, an alternate one) NEVOT can be obtained from gaia.cs.umass.edu in /pub/hgschulz/nevot/. The files are named nevot-3.32-*.tar.gz, where the star represents an operating system name.
- NV (Video tool, one of two that are mandatory) NV is available at parcftp.xerox.com in /pub/net-research/nv-3.3beta. The files are named nvbin-*, where the star represents an operating system name and version number. The file contains documentation relative to installation.
- VIC (Video tool, the second that is mandatory) VIC is available at ftp.ee.lbl.gov in /conferencing/vat/. The files are named *-vicbin-2.6.tar.Z, where the star represents an operating system name. The file contains documentation relative to installation.
- IVS (Video tool, an alternate one) IVS can be obtained from zenon.inria.fr in /rodeo/ivs/last_version/. The files are named Ivs3.5-*.Tar.Gz where the star represents a version number, an operating system name.
- WB (Whiteboard, the only one that exists) WB is available at ftp.ee.lbl.gov /conferencing/wb/. The files are named *-wb-1.59.tar.Z, where the star represents an operating system version name.
- IMM (Image downloader and) IMM is stored at ftp.hawaii.edu in /paccom/imm-3.3/. The files are named imm-*.tar.Z, where the star represents an operating system name.
- RAT (Audio tool, an alternate one) RAT is available at bells.cs.ucl.ac.uk in /mice/rat. The files are named rat-2.0a2.*.tar.gz where the star represents an operating system name.
- MUMBLE (Text tool) MUMBLE is available at these two sites in the same directory: ftp.denet.dk and bells.cs.ucl.ac.uk in /pub/videoconference/mumble. The files are named mumble_*.tar.gz, where the star represents an operating system name.
The following are MBONE management tools:
- Traceroute. Traceroute comes with most flavors of UNIX. You can get traceroute for Solaris 2.* from opcom.sun.ca in /tars/, and the file to get is traceroute.sol2.tar.gz.
Traceroute for Linux can be obtained from ftp.funet.fi in /pub/Linux/kernel/src/. The file to get is named traceroute.
- Mtrace. Mtrace comes with the mrouted 3.8 package. See the Multicast Router Software part of this appendix.
- Netstat. Netstat comes with every flavor of UNIX.
- Mlisten and mprocess. Mlisten and mprocess are two special cases. They can't be obtained from ftp, but they can be downloaded from a web site. A Web browser is required, but it doesn't need to be a graphical one. Go to http://www.cc.gatech.edu/computing/Telecomm/mbone/
You will be presented with the latest mlisten and mprocess news. The Web page contains a few more links to other documents, two of which contain mlisten and mprocess.
- Mrinfo. Mrinfo comes with the mrouted 3.8 package. See the Multicast Router Software part of this appendix.
